Electrical industry

Orbital friction can create high-quality electrical welded joints between copper alloys and aluminium that resist mechanical stress. Brittle phases and the oxidation of the welding area can be avoided thanks to the low amount of energy required and the permanent contact between the components.

With a current material cost that is a third of that of copper, the importance of aluminium in the electrical industry continues to grow. The sheer weight advantage of aluminium is an effect that is frequently taken advantage of, especially for mobile applications. More and more companies are switching to aluminium for power lines, motor parts and other electrical components. Often, copper alloys are only used in the contact and terminal areas as they have a better corrosion behaviour.
